41) Sunset

Date: 2011-06-06 08:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Near future
Notes: Inspired by concept art of "Alice: Madness Returns" where Alice is scrambling all over the rooftops of London. Considering the beginning of "Secundus" has Victor flown over these rooftops, it seemed appropriate. "A thing of beauty is a joy forever" is from John Keats, by the way.

“Goodness. Would you look at that sunset.”
Victor gazed out at the splashes of brilliant red, blazing orange, golden yellow, light pink, dark purple, and indigo blue that made up the horizon. It looked like some giant hand had taken a paintbrush and applied the colors in haphazard, but still ultimately purposeful strokes. It was a thing of beauty, a joy forever, as someone had said.
Alice, sitting next to him, nodded. “Wonderful. You were right – the only place to see this is from a rooftop.”
“I know,” Victor said, sliding his arm around her. “Everything’s beautiful this high up.”

6) Part Time Job

Date: 2011-06-06 08:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: After "Secundus"
Notes: This one took a while to properly wrestle down -- too much description made it too long, while the dialogue-only version was actually too short. Finally I got it to work. This comes along after Victor goes Creative -- the house is an early wedding present from Alice's aunt and uncle.

“Doc, no. Y-you shouldn’t p-pay me for s-so little work,” Victor protested. “Especially n-not after I essentially a-abandoned this place. I’m s-sorry about that, by the way, I just--”
“Got a house courtesy of your fiancee’s aunt and uncle and were eager to set up a proper biological lab,” Doc finished for him. “Victor, it’s fine. I understand what you’re feeling. I’m a Touched too, remember? I know this place couldn’t provide the materials you need.” He pressed the money into Victor’s hand. “Part time is fine by me. You’ll always have a place here.”
Victor smiled, relieved. “Thanks, Doc.”

66) Tire Swing Picture

Date: 2011-06-06 08:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: After "Secundus," summer
Notes: I just really wanted to do a fic with Alice on a swing for some reason. XD

Victor gave Alice another push, grinning as she soared away from him again with a laugh. “I don’t think I’ve ever gotten this high on a swing before!” she called back to him as her body briefly defied gravity.
“I knew these long arms were good for something!” Victor replied as she returned to him, narrowly avoiding the seat catching him in the middle.
“Oh, quite!” Up she went again. “I’m glad we decided not to try the motorized swing. I much prefer having you here to push me.”
“I’ll always be here to give you a lift,” Victor smiled.

From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Near future (Victor & Alice's honeymoon -- they go to a beach)
Notes: Comedy piece! With how pale Victor is, you know he'd burn like crazy if he didn't take proper precautions. (I've done at least one ficlet with this theme before, in fact.) "Dr. Bumby" is a shout-out to Alice's (possibly-evil) psychiatrist in "Alice: Madness Returns."

“Look at how pink you are!”
“I know. Oh, I should have spent more time under the umbrella. . . .”
“I saw you putting on sunscreen, Victor. Twice!”
“That’s probably the only reason I’m not a deep red. Burtonsville isn’t known for strong sun even on the brightest days, and my being so pale can’t help matters.”
“No, I’m sure it can’t. Not to worry, though – I packed something that should help.”
“‘Dr. Bumby’s Healing Lotion?’”
“I’ve used it – it works like a charm for sunburn. And other things. Now take off your shirt.”
“But, Alice, I’m not sunburned beneath my – ooooh.”

19) itch

Date: 2011-06-13 03:36 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Future (Victor & Alice married)
Notes: Just a quick study of how lucky one would be to have someone with Victor's long fingers around for situations like these. This originally ended slightly naughtier (with Victor blushing), but that went over the word count.

Victor paused in the doorway to the drawing room. Alice was standing inside, doing all sorts of odd gyrations. “What are you doing?”
Alice grimaced in his general direction. “There’s an itch on my back and I – just – can’t – reach–” Her hands scrabbled uselessly at the area between her shoulders. “Help?”
Victor went over and started scratching. “Over to your left a bit – more – little more – there we go.” Alice sighed in relief. “Thank you, Victor.”
“You’re very welcome,” Victor said, kissing her cheek.
Alice sighed again. “I’m so lucky to have married a man with such long, talented fingers.”

24) nap

From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Future (Victor & Alice married)
Notes: This was another one that gave me problems in getting it down to size. I was about to abandon the story and try something else when I got the idea to do it as Victor's thoughts (with a little interjection from Alice at the end). Poor Victor, his insomnia doesn't give him a break.

Oh, why does my mind hate me? All I want is a hour or two of sleep. Not even a full night! Just something to recharge myself before I go back into the lab. Instead I find myself staring at the ceiling. Of course.
Perhaps I should just go back to my butterflies. No, my notes were getting to be little more than squiggles. No going back until I sleep. Maybe turning over will help.
No, of course it doesn’t. I – wait, is that Alice? Why is she stroking my hair like–
Actually, that – that feels. . .nice. . . .
“Sleep tight, Victor.”

Date: 2011-06-21 02:35 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Nearish future (post climax of "Secundus")
Notes: I wasn't sure what to do for this one for a bit. Then I remembered a cartoon I saw in one of my old educational kid's magazines about a butterfly stepping in a puddle of strawberry ice cream, realized I had a particularly large butterfly to play around with, and. . . The cone is technically an anachronism, but I think I'm allowed a few of those in a steampunk multiverse tale. :p

Victor sat back on the bench, smiling. The sun was shining, the air was warm, and he had chocolate ice cream – life was good. Especially since he had something new to try – the vendor had been very enthusiastic about this new ‘waffle cone.’ Victor had to admit, it looked tasty. He happily started licking away.
Only to have a large black proboscis slip into his cone and start sucking. “Ferdy!” Victor jerked the cone away. “No! People food! Bad!”
Ferdinand’s antennae wilted. “Oh, fine,” Victor sighed, dropping the cone and rising to get another. “The things I do for you. . . .”

2) festival

Date: 2011-06-21 02:42 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Future, in "Secundus 2"
Notes: BTTF-based fic! "Secundus 2" contains a few elements from Part III of the original trilogy, so naturally I was going to use the town festival. I've been trying to write something featuring Jennifer and Clara for a while now -- here they at least make appearances. I'd initially planned for this to have dialogue, but I couldn't wrestle it down to 100 words with characters talking.

The Hill Valley Town Festival was proof that this tiny town knew how to throw a good party. Richard was taking a turn at the shooting gallery, startling everyone by using his index finger gun. Christopher was nearby, commenting on how to improve the gallery’s mechanical innards. Victoria and Emily were admiring some quilts on display. Marty, Jennifer, Doc, and Clara were all out on the dance floor, bounding around to the band’s bouncy music. And Victor and Alice were camped out by the food tables, enjoying the strawberry pie. It was a fantastic night –
Until Buford Tannen showed up.

85) Author’s Choice: fairytale

Date: 2011-06-21 02:54 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Future (post "Secundus 2")
Notes: I've had the idea of Victor warping a fairytale to fit the weirdness of Secundus for a while now, but it was watching Tangled the other day that inspired me to pull it out for this. I just think it would make a cute fractured fairy tale. The companion story is "86) Author's Choice: princess," which you can see directly below.

“Tell us a story, Daddy!”
“What sort of story?” Victor asked, looking at his children.
“About princesses, dragons and adventure,” Lorina proclaimed.
“Yeah,” Vincent agreed. “But not like the usual ones. Something different.”
“Something new,” Chester nodded.
Something new? Victor frowned thoughtfully. He wasn’t really one for coming up with stories on the fly – that was more Alice’s forte. He was reasonably certain he could tell a story about a princess and a dragon, though. But how to turn it into something new?
Then it hit him. He grinned and leaned forward. “Once upon a time, there was a scientist. . . .”

Notes: Oh God, this image has been in my head for a WHILE now. Lucky me noticed this prompt and just HAD to do something related to steampunk motorcycles. I just wish the word limit had allowed me to describe it more! Picture lots of gleaming brass and unnecessary cogwheels.

When Victor had bought the “motorcycle,” he’d thought he was merely doing something nice for his wife. Alice had expressed a wish for a vehicle of her own, and he’d wanted to find something really special. When he’d come across the motorized bicycle, he had been sure he’d found a winner.
And, well, he supposed he had. Alice loved the thing and its speed. Perhaps a bit too much. Every ride they took together had him clinging to her for dear life. He supposed it was fun, in a way – but all things considered, he’d be sticking to riding Ferdinand.

4) float

Date: 2011-06-29 02:10 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Vague present (between Chapters 5 and 6, maybe into 6+)
Notes: This one was inspired by my other hotly-anticipated game of the month -- "Back To The Future: The Game" Episode 5, by Telltale. The game mini-series features a young Doc Brown, and this is one of the things he invents while Marty and the older Doc are mucking around in space and time. I liked a certain part where Marty had to grab hold of the static accumulator and ended up "flying" with it briefly, so I ran with it.

“Um, Doc?”
“Yes, Victor?”
“I found this odd object in the old parts bin. It’s a cannister, with a tube wrapped around it that glows blue. . . .”
“Oh, my old Static Accumulator! That was actually one of my earliest inventions. A prototypical version of the magnetic system I use for levitation in the train.”
“I, er, guessed that.”
“Pardon?”
“I was w-wondering what it did, so I f-fiddled around until I found out how to charge it back up. . .I hope you don’t mind.”
“Not at all, Victor! Go ahead!”
“Oh, good. So – ah – can you get me off the ceiling?”

87) Author’s Choice: nightmare

Date: 2011-06-29 02:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Future (post-wedding)
Notes: I'm -- honestly not sure where this dark prompt came from. It just popped into my head. It originally had Victor waking up all the way and trying to pass off his recurring nightmare, but that wouldn't fit in the word count. A visual representation of his dream can be found here (http://charloft.livejournal.com/2881483.html).

Hearing someone whimpering was not the best thing to wake up to, Alice realized. Concerned, she leaned over her husband. Victor was all curled in on himself, and his expression – he was not having a nice dream. She shook his shoulder. “Victor. Victor!”
Victor stirred, looking up at her. He seemed surprised to see her. “Alice?”
Alice nodded. “Are you--”
Victor grabbed her in a tight hug, sniffling. “Stay,” he whispered, sounding not quite awake. “Don’t want to be all alone in the dark. . . .”
Alice felt her heart break. “Don’t worry,” she whispered, hugging back. “I’ll never leave you alone.”

From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Future, with kids
Notes: Inspired by my parents and myself finding interesting things at the beach, and by a log on the bike path near our house that resembled a dragon. (Sadly, it's disappeared.) I just thought it was a cute scene.

“Daddy, look what I found!”
Victor looked up to see his daughter thrusting a piece of wood at him. “Er--”
“It’s a dragon!” Lorina said, turning it. “See?”
Victor studied it. From the side, it did have a rather reptilian shape. “Oh! Yes, there’s the head, and the horns, and the tail. . . .”
Lorina nodded eagerly. “Can I take it home?”
Victor smiled. “Of course you can.”
Lorina grinned and put the “dragon” down by his chair before rushing back to the water’s edge. Victor watched her go, chuckling.
He wondered how many pieces of wood they’d end up bringing home.

45) sunrise

Date: 2011-07-20 03:52 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Nearish future (post-wedding)
Notes: This one somehow turned out mildly depressing. I blame "Alice: Madness Returns" and the Rutledge Asylum mini-level. Victor's understanding what it's like to be trapped refers to the climax of "Secundus," when he's trapped in what's left of Looking-Glass House. (I'm also pretty sure I was inspired by one of [livejournal.com profile] il_barone's drabbles, but I can't remember which one. ^^;)

Light was just breaking over the horizon when Victor rolled over and discovered Alice was not there to cuddle. Investigating the clues led him to, of all places, the roof. Alice was sitting there, staring off into the distance. “Alice?” Victor said, concerned.
Alice looked up at him. “I had a dream about Rutledge,” she said, voice strained. “I just. . .had to get out. . . .”
Victor had never been committed, but he certainly understood what it felt like to be trapped. He sat next to her and pulled her close, offering what comfort he could. Together, they watched the sun rise.

90) Author’s Choice: grave

Date: 2011-07-20 03:58 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Near future, shortly before the wedding
Notes: Another sad one I'm blaming on "Alice: Madness Returns." I figured Alice would eventually want to bring Victor to "meet" her parents, and out of that came this fic. Poor Mr. and Mrs. Liddell -- I do think they would have liked Victor.

The headstones were taller than the norm, and beautifully engraved. The top of each sported a rose, underneath which was the name, the dates of birth and death, and the phrase “rest in peace.” Victor looked from left to right as he stood before them. “H-hello, Mr. and Mrs. Liddell,” he said softly. “It’s V-Victor Van Dort. Your daughter’s f-fiancé. Well, husband soon – we’re getting m-married July seventh. We thought you o-ought to know.” He shifted awkwardly, then sighed. “I wish I could have met you when you were alive.”
Alice squeezed his hand. “I’m sure they wish the same.”

From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Future, post-marriage
Notes: The companion fic to "75) leaping shark picture." When I was writing the previous fic about Victor, I suddenly realized that I could link the two pictures featuring dangerous animals together. Alice is definitely a dangerous girl, and I'd imagine she'd protect what loved ones she has left fiercely. Basically, the idea is: you upset one, you incur the wrath of the other. (Do NOT get them both mad at you at the same time. Trust me.)

Most people would call Alice Liddell Van Dort a threatening human being. Her skill with her Vorpal Blade was practically legendary. People knew her as a powerful monster killer, and thus did their best not to upset her.
Of course, there were always those who wanted to push their luck. Alice generally limited her treatment of them to cold looks and snide comments. But the moment anyone wanted to bully her husband – someone had said it was like having a bloodthirsty tiger suddenly dive into the quiet pool you’d been relaxing in.
People generally only bothered Victor Van Dort once.

18) summer love

Date: 2011-07-21 12:17 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Future, post-climax of "Secundus," pre-wedding
Notes: Just a quick thing talking about Victor and Alice's summer wedding. They really do get married abnormally quickly -- Victor proposes shortly after his 20th birthday on June 9th, and they get married on July 7th. Fortunately neither of them are into big, showy weddings.

Victor and Alice knew it was a surprise to their loved ones when they decided to get married less than a month after Victor proposed. Everyone had expected a short engagement period, but not one that short. Didn’t they need more time to plan, some asked? Or even to just enjoy being engaged?
Victor and Alice knew what they were doing, though. Yes, they’d have to rush through some things, and skip a few others – but that was an acceptable sacrifice. They were in love, and they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. Waiting wasn’t an option.

From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Vagueish present (between Chapters 5 and 6 of "Secundus")
Notes: One of my favorite creatures from the animated Disney movie of Alice was the "umbrella vulture." They just looked so cute, frolicking in that stream. I decided to go ahead and introduce them to this universe, since we could use more silly things. (And hey, I'm allowed to mix-and-match in a multiverse, aren't I?) Victor's confusion over the rain comes from it being established in Chapter 4 (http://docnvictorsgirl.weebly.com/sec04.html) that it's almost always sunny in the park due to a localized weather system.

“Oh!”
Victor slammed his sketchbook shut as the first drops of rain began to fall. I thought it wasn’t supposed to rain in this park! he thought as he held his book to his chest, protecting it. Perhaps Lewis is tinkering with–
Something landed on his shoulder. Victor looked over to see a creature that resembled a cloaked vulture. “Oh! Er--”
The bird gave a squawk, then puffed out its body. Victor suddenly found himself under an umbrella canopy of waterproof feathers. He sighed in relief. “Thank you,” he said gratefully. “I’ll bring you a treat next time I come.”

32) watermelon

Date: 2011-07-30 05:17 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Future, in "Secundus 2"
Notes: I really wasn't sure what to do with this prompt until I hit upon the idea of a picnic. From that, I decided to go ahead and put the whole thing in the time period of "Secundus 2." Farmer Peabody is a nod back to BTTF Part I and the pine tree farm that became Twin Pines/Lone Pine mall. Also, I'm sure you can tell when this is set in relation to Part III. . . .

“You’re just carrying it whole?”
“Yeah – we’ll carve it at the picnic site, so it’ll be fresh,” Marty said, placing the watermelon in a basket. He carefully slid a large knife in there with it. “You’ll like this – Farmer Peabody grows the best watermelons. When he isn’t obsessing over his pine trees.”
“I look forward to tasting it,” Victor said, running his fingers over the rind. “If I don’t fall into that ravine we’re picnicking near.”
“You’re not going to fall in,” Marty told him, lightly poking him in the chest. “Nobody’s falling into any ravines today. Cross my heart.”

Notes: Oooh, this one. . .I got inspired by a great How To Train Your Dragon fic, Talking In Her Sleep (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6728541/1/Talking_in_Her_Sleep). In that, both Astrid and Ruffnut go gaga over a newly tall and very handsome Hiccup. Astrid spends a lot of time drooling over the way his muscles flex, and how he looks shirtless in the forge. I got to thinking about how Alice might react if she saw Victor shirtless, and bam! XD Poor girl, she has no idea how to deal with lust. (But then again, neither does Victor, so. . .)

She shouldn’t be here. She shouldn’t be standing here watching him – why didn’t he have a shirt on? Oh God, why did he ever wear a shirt? He’s so pale and so thin and – so flexible. . .the way his muscles move as he stretches is just too much. . . .
He turns suddenly, and yelps. “Alice!”
“I’m sorry!” she yelps back. “I was--” don’t get distracted by his chest don’t get distracted by his chest “–I – I’ll go.”
She bolts before he can speak, looking for the nearest source of cold water. Damn him, why does he have to look like that?

11) blue skies

From: [identity profile] 8butterflyboy8.livejournal.com
Time Period: Future (post-climax of "Secundus," pre-marriage)
Notes: It took me a bit to decide on this one, but finally I came up with something appropriate. Victor and Ferdinand make a nice pair, and I imagine he'd be pretty happy to take his first flight on his new riding butterfly. I threw in the Hiccup mention because, well, the guy designed the saddle for a dragon -- I think he has know-how Victor needs.

It’s a brilliantly sunny day when Victor takes Ferdinand out for his first ride. He hopes that it’s a good omen. He’s been dreaming about this day for months, as he experimented and tweaked –
Ferdinand runs his proboscis over his face, making Victor laugh. He checks his riding gear again – it was difficult making a saddle for a butterfly, but with hard work (and help from Hiccup Haddock), he managed it. Then he mounts, carefully avoiding the wings. “Up, Ferdinand,” he says, voice trembling.
Ferdinand flaps his wings, takes off – and just like that, the blue sky is his.
Yes.

Notes: I wanted to do a bit more with Victor at his job. Unfortunately, the picture here suggested feeling awkward to me, so he gets to deal with a bad customer. Luckily Doc is willing to stick up for him. (Also luckily, the word count did not allow for my original idea of the customer pulling out a death ray. . . .)

“Incompetent! Imbecile! It cannot be that much!”
“Sir, I assure you, I’ve c-checked the prices t-three times,” Victor stuttered. He hated customers like these. They always made him feel completely out of his element. Like a horse stranded on the beach, or a fish flopping on the pavement. “It really--”
“Thoughtless fool! I should--”
“If you’re going to continue yelling abuse at my staff, you can leave,” Doc cut in from nowhere. “That is the correct price. Pay.”
The customer grumbled, but eventually paid and left. Doc patted Victor’s shoulder. “Want a cup of tea?” he asked understandingly.
“Yes, please.”

97) Author’s Choice: hysteria

Notes: First off, this is probably the most risque one of the lot, so it's at least semi-Not Safe For Work. Secondly, this is all on the Girl Genius LJ community. Someone posted a link to a new romantic comedy called "Hysteria," and -- well, watch (http://youtu.be/vnwougM4sYo). My horrible brain started thinking of Alice and her "hysteria mode" in the new game (which is her near-death super mode, get your mind out of the gutter), and this resulted. (Admittedly, the idea of Victor using his pianist fingers in dirty ways has lingered in my thoughts. . .)

She clung to him, fingers digging into his skin as he worked his magic. God, had he always been this good with his hands? She’d admired those long fingers for a while now, admittedly, but somehow she’d never really imagined. . . . Bloody hell, the things he was doing with them! He was being so gentle, and yet – Maybe he sees me as an instrument to be played, she thought, panting. I – oh – OH–
Afterwards, he pushed her sweaty hair out of her face, looking shy. “G-good?” he asked, voice soft.
“Oh Victor,” she breathed. “I am developing hysteria just for you.”

Notes: SNAAAARRRKKKS! I hate these fish with a blinding passion. They spit poison at you, yank you into the water (or LAVA) with their tongues. . .even the angler-type Ice Snarks in "Madness Returns" are horrible, with their freezing breath. Alice saved Victor from his first encounter with a Snark, but unfortunately she can't be there all the time. . . .

Victor had no idea how it had happened. One minute he’d been happily reading a book by the Pool of Tears, the next he’d been yanked under the water. He thrashed, trying to find the surface so he could breathe.
There was a sharp stab of pain at his shoulder – he whirled to see a snark chewing on his jacket. It promptly tried to bite his arm. Victor dodged, swimming upward.
He found the air again, then swam back to shore as the snark continued to nibble him. He gasped as he dragged himself away from the beach. “Bloody fish!”

72) stairs to a beach picture

Time Period: Vague future (post-marriage)
Notes: I didn't want to do another "visiting the beach" story, as I feel like I've done a lot of those, so I decided to focus on the stairs portion. Victor's clumsiness chooses the worst moments to wake up.

This was one of those things that could only happen to him, Victor mused as he lay at the base of the stairs. One moment, he was happily preparing to head downstairs for tea, the next toppling head over heels because he wasn’t paying attention to where the first step was. At least we have a nice soft carpet here.
“Victor!” Alice knelt by him. “Are you all right? Can you get up?”
Victor tried, wincing as he did. “I feel like one big bruise – but I’ll be all right. I’ve taken worse falls.”
“Not on my watch, you don’t.”
